SBAY Non-Profit Corporate/Organizational Wiki

This area is for SBAY Corporate and Organizational topics.

One question that came up at the time that SBAY was incorporating was why to make a formal structure to the organization. At the time, it had already existed for over a decade as an informal organization. There were many reasons to incorporate related to pursuit of IRS 501(c)3 status for our growing community-oriented efforts. There was also an aspect of the question of whether a "community" group should have structure at all. By Human nature, all organizations have structure - whether formal or informal. Long before the Open Source Software movement, another movement in the 1970's analyzed this same issue in the paper, "The Tyranny of Structurelessness". The formal structure allows everyone to know what the structure is and how to choose a level to participate in the organization. So it was an explicit choice to make a community organization with a formal structure.
